Table of Contents

Summary

At first, the poet prays for his infant daughter who is sleeping in her cradle, at that time a violent storm blows outside. It makes the poet gloomy and worried for the future of his child. He prays for his daughter. He wants three qualities for his daughter to possess when she grows up. He prays to God for the usual beauty for his daughter because too much beauty causes havoc. The next quality is courtesy because courtesy can win the heart of people and makes a man as calm as a laurel tree. His last wishes to God that his daughter should be without hatred because hatred chokes up the mind. Lastly, he prays to God that the bridegroom of his daughter should come from an aristocratic family. Because custom and beauty are born only in an aristocratic family.

Here storm symbolizes the “2nd World War”. So the poet was afraid of his daughter.
