Summary

The poem is divided into two sections. In the first section, the poet describes his grandmother’s death and section two is about his sister’s death.

At first, the poet described a death scene. When he was eight years old he lost his grandmother. One night when he was sleeping, someone from his family dragged him from the bed. His grandmother was taking her last breath. She wanted to drink water for the last time by his hands. After giving water, he again went to sleep. When he woke up, his grandmother was no more. Islamic priests-were uttering verses from the scriptures. His neighbors also came to stand beside them. This is the first lesson he got in his early childhood. This stanza is based on a child’s psychology.

Then, he got the second lesson on grief. It was just after two years when I was ten. His sister was born with pneumonia. Pneumonia was one of the most dangerous diseases in the middle of the 20th century. It stole his sister’s life as well. His home became silent again. His mother, unlike the other thousand mothers, was very much worried. The life of the poet had been changed. He had no childhood activities. He could not even make fun with his friends. He remained busy with his homework. His life became very much boring.

Two lessons made his attitude towards life mature. All are the lessons of reality. None can avoid this reality. Life is a combination of ups and downs. Therefore, he stood back. In the end, the poet also learned the grief.
